Initial Impressions of Joost

Filed under: Video Streaming — gadgetblogger @ 2:19 pm

Ok I must admit ive been playing with Joost. Initial impressions are positive.

The concept is different to other ideas such as You Tube. The content is not provided by users but by Joost themself. They have managed to sign up some big names such as National Geographic and Fifth Gear. Unfortunately at this stage the amount of channels isnt huge although enough to evaluate the product. Id like to see more movies etc.

The quality of the picture and sound is impressive. I also like the facility that allows you to search for any program you want to watch. Again at this stage their isnt enough content to make this viable.

But imagine if in the future you could put a search in for CSI for example and watch any previous episode or current episode at your convenience. This will be true interactive TV.

Im putting up a few screenshots to show you the interface. From my initial review its a good concept however the problem we have here is lack of content. I would be interested to know if any major networks sign up. If we can get some good quality programming fed over internet tv there is no reason why we couldnt eventually replace satellite tv with internet tv.

The current problems are:

* Lack of major tv networks signing up

* Technology is new and still we are seeing jitters and audio issues. I know its still beta so these can be ironed out.

* The individual countries broadcasting laws are going to stop us from being able to subscribe to an internet tv network outside of our country. This is ashame as it would be great to catch up on episodes of Lost, Heroes etc via a U.S TV network before they are released in the U.K. I think tv broadcasting should be opened up globally. If I want to subscribe to a cheaper tv network with more content in the U.S then I should be able to do just that !!.
