Doesn't have HDMI connector but does work fine when using a cable with DVI on one end and HDMI on the other. This is how I have mine plugged into my TV. Never had a problem playing 6-9GB DVD ISO images that I stream from my Samba file server. I only stream media though, I don't use an internally installed hard drive. I agree the music interface could use work. Also waiting for WPA and FTP server to be addressed in upcoming firmware update. Overall thought quite happy with the purchase. Address a few niggles with firmware and it will be fabulous.

Greetings

Well written.

You mentioned that since you use SMB for file serving that it was up an running in seconds. I have a couple of Vantec NexStar LX File Servers (HD enclosures) that use SMB but with no luck browsing them. The mvix "sees" them but once connected cannot see the contents of the drives. IOW it sees the root but it appears empty. Any idea why?

Much appreciated.

Hi Paul, thanks

Have you tried taking a copy of my samba file and tweaking it to match your needs.
Are you using Debian?

One problem I experienced was where I could view the folder on Mvix but couldnt see the contents. This sounds similar to yours. This was down to linux software firewall blocking the mvix device. Once I opened up ports for samba everything worked fine.

If you arent familiar with configuring your linux firewall i highly recommend firestarter. This application enables you to easily see what traffic is being rejected by your linux firewall. You can easily create a rule to allow specific traffic just by clicking a button.

You can get firestarter by running

apt-get install firestarter

Let us know how it goes. It does sound like a firewall issue to me if you can view the folder.

Hi,

Great review. This box is getting there, but I'm still looking for Nirvana. Not just wireless NAS connected to the hard-wired player, but a wireless player, utilising the broadband wireless network we all now have at home, to stream to multiple clients. Hence, someone sitting downstairs in the lounge could be watching a movie, kids upstairs watching their favourite cartoons, while someone cooking in the kitchen listening to internet radio or their favourite music tracks. Oh, and I'd also like a wireless sound system!

Now I've seen various components of these, but nothing as one complete unit. How close is the MX-760HD to providing this all-in-one box?

Regards,

Khurrum, The MX-760HD isnt close to achieving what you desire. I think we would all like a device as you say that will multi-task multiple outputs at the same time. I think this device will arrive but id give it a few years.

The MX-760HD is merely the start of this. Just as the ZX spectrum was the start of home computing. We will look back on the MX-760HD in a few years and say hey this thing was so slow, lacks this feature etc etc but Ill always remember that Mvix got there first :-)

Quick question - is the LCD screen on this model good enough to be able to search for, access and play audio files without having to use the TV?

Thanks.

Phil. In response to your question the LCD is fine for navigation if you stand up close to the unit as its a small screen. As to searching this isnt available. Its a case of manual navigation through folders currently "unfortunately". So to summarise you dont need to have the tv switched on but a search feature isnt available yet. Maybe a newer version of firmware will improve this.
Although audio streaming is good I think that Mvix have shifted their focus towards development of the movie streaming interface.

The review and snapshots has helped quite a bit in a search for the right media box, but I was wondering if you were able to successfully stream 720p content via wireless without glitching and/or desyncing problems? I read where dvd5-9 work great but do you know if the mpeg2 vs mpeg4 compression make a difference on the processing unit?

I currently use XBMC and the only thing that would make me upgrade is to play hd content over the air and I was hoping you could help me out!

Thanks,
Jay.

Hi Jay - The Mvix Wireless HD MX-760HD supports full 1,080p HD. It has a DVI connector to connect to your HD TV.

You may be aware you can download and endode videos in Divx HD format.

You can read more about it here: http://www.divx.com/hd/#faq3
You can view some HD videos here - http://stage6.divx.com - In the search box type HD to search for HD format videos

If you stream these videos over the wireless connection then the quality will be in HD format. I must admit that most movies I watch are in DivX HD format and I havent noticed any significant glitching issues.

Im using Linux with Samba to host my video files and a Vigor2800VG wireless router.

Let me know if you need any assistance.

Hi Gerry. Unfortunately this device doesnt support playlists.
It cannot play M3U, WPL, or ASX playlists. You can however set up your own custom playlists however this is a little cumbersome. Hopefully a firemware update will improve this going forward.

Hi, just wondering if this can play dvd ripped to harddrive on network.(IFO and VOB Files). Will the playback be smooth on wireless or does it need to be hard wired to network. Also can you browse through dvd menu like playback on DVD Disk on DVD Player. I basically have a lot of DVD,s ripped to hard drive, and solely looking to playback these dvds to a TV. Thanks Rob

Rob,

If you are planning on IFO and VOB files I would definitely recommend direct cabling. The bandwidth involved with these files will be huge. If this is your plan Id probably recommend you just plug a laptop (one that that has s-video output) into your tv and connect to your other pc via UTP cables.

The Mvix is more suited to DivX, Xvid, Mpeg, Avi formats where the video has been compressed to allow streaming without the requirement for a huge amount of bandwidth or processing power.

I have thes player, however I have 2 problems, maybe someone can help?

1. When trying to play videos wireless over the network through the network shares it tries to load the file but hangs, I left it for a good 15 minutes and it never starts. Works fine on the LAN cable connection.

2. When I download a DIVX HD file .avi it will never play, says unsupported file type. Normal DIVX files work fine.

Any help would be much appriciated.

Thanks
